Over the past few years, the depletion of natural resources has raised sincere concern. Around one third of all food produced for human consumption is wasted, representing a substantial ecological burden. On the other hand, these waste streams are rich in bioactive compounds and hold significant potential for biotransformation into an array of high-value products. In this sense, the reuse of these resources is the pillar of the circular bioeconomy. Farmers are challenged to use this knowledge to reduce the quantities of by-products produced or reusing these resources for a new purpose. This will open new profit areas, as part of a broader emerging bio-economy and circular-economic model, to provide win-win solutions able to minimize wastage, promote growth and job creation, and prompt sustainable local development.
